Living With Shoulder Pain
We don’t think much about our shoulders until they start to give us pain. Statistics show that around a quarter of the general population suffer from shoulder pain at any given time and that a least half of these develop into long term chronic pain and disability which can severally impact your ability to enjoy all the things you love doing.
Shoulder pain is typically triggered by any of the following situations:
- Forward head and neck posture
- Tendonitis or tears of the rotator cuff or biceps tendons
- Bursitis from impingement syndromes
- Heavy lifting and repetitive stress
- Trauma or injury
- Poor muscle tone and flexibility
- Breast feeding and holding children
While shoulder problems can cause pain and stiffness in the shoulder they can also cause issues with the arms, hands, neck, back and can even contribute to headaches. Therefore in dealing with shoulder problems it is important that your whole body is assessed and treated to deal with the underlying cause of your pain.
How osteopathy can help
Osteopaths work to identify and diagnose patterns of strain within your entire body. These strain patterns are often the cause of your pain as they place excessive stress on the tissues found around the shoulder. By focusing on increasing joint motion, blood supply and drainage to the shoulder Osteopathic techniques help to decrease muscle tension, inflammation and nerve irritability which help to unlock these patterns of stress and pain.
Osteopaths use a number of hands on techniques in the treatment of shoulder pain and combined with our thorough assessment we can devise an individualised treatment plan to suite your particular needs.
