What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy aimed at restoring posture, balance and function to the body through a combination of touch, stretching, movement and physical manipulation. It is a holistic form of medicine that uses your body’s natural healing mechanisms to help increase joint mobility, relieve muscle tension, and enhance blood and nerve supply. It is a holistic and patient-centred form of care which aims to get to the root cause of your pain and not just provide symptomatic relief. It can help prevent injuries as well as manage them and encourages freedom of movement so that you can continue to do all those things you enjoy doing.

What to expect during a treatment?

Osteopaths have a deep understanding of the workings of all your muscles, joints and body systems. In Australia osteopaths are government registered and undergo a 5 year university degree covering anatomy, physiology, pathology, general healthcare diagnosis and osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths are considered primary healthcare practitioners whose focus is on treating the musculosketal system but are also trained to recognise conditions that require medical referral.

You will be asked questions about your problem and symptoms as well as information regarding your medical history and any medications you may be currently taking. We then conduct a full osteopathic examination which is made up of a structural assessment along with motion testing and any necessary orthopaedic and neurological tests. Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to treatment, so we may look at other parts of your body, as well as the area that is troubling you. For example, if you have a sore knee, we will also look at your ankle, pelvis and back.

After taking a comprehensive examination and assessment we can determine whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate and which particular techniques are best suited to your individual case. We will explain what we think is causing your problem as well as laying out a treatment plan which may also include advice to help you manage your condition between appointments and exercises to do at home or work.
