Living With Arthritis
Arthritis means inflammation of the joint and is a major cause of disability in Australia affecting people of all ages and walks of life. Arthritis is often misinterpreted as simply a disease which affects elderly people, when in fact 60% of those who are diagnosed with arthritis are between the ages of 15 – 60 years. Arthritis affects 3.4 million Australians
Different types of arthritis exist, each with different causes including wear and tear, infections and underlying diseases with the most common being
- Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs gradually and worsens over time as the protective tissue at the ends of bones (cartilage) wears down. Joint pain and stiffness in the hands, neck, lower back, knees or hips are the most common symptoms.
- Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting many joints, including those in the hands and feet. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue, including joints. In severe cases, it attacks internal organs. It affects joint linings, causing painful swelling. Over long periods of time, the inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis can cause bone erosion and joint deformity.
- Gout is s form of arthritis characterised by severe pain, redness and tenderness in joints. Pain and inflammation occur when too much uric acid crystallises and deposits in the joints. Symptoms of gout include severe pain, redness and swelling in joints, often the big toe. Attacks can come suddenly, often at night. Patients with chronic gout can use behavioural modification such as diet, exercise and decreased intake of alcohol to help minimise the frequency of attacks.
How osteopathy can help
While osteopathy cannot reverse the underlying joint damage caused by arthritis osteopathic treatment can do a great deal to reduce pain, ease swelling and improve mobility and range of joint movement. By using gentle, manual osteopathic techniques on joints, muscles and ligaments, treatment is aimed at improving mobility, blood flow, lymphatic drainage and reducing inflammation.
